Keith Brown, Deputy Leader of the SNP, will today implore the pro-independence supporters that they have a crucial role to play by persuading their fellow Scots that independence is Scotland’s best hope of building “a fairer, wealthier and happier nation”. However, some of Mr Brown’s comments have come under fire after he said “ordinary voters” were easily “confused and cowed” by big decisions about the future of the country. Donald Cameron MSP, Scottish Conservative Shadow Cabinet Secretary for the Constitution, said: “Branding the majority of Scotland stupid is a strange way to reach out to everyone who voted No in 2014.

“As if that wasn’t bad enough, he doesn’t seem to realise that calling for a ‘giant leap forward’ copies a slogan from one of the worst authoritarian regimes the world has known.”

The “authoritarian regime” Mr Cameron refers to is that of Chairman Mao of China who called for a “giant leap forward” to reconstruct China into a communist society, killing an estimated 80 million people in the process.

The SNP’s four-day virtual event will touch on their plans for combatting the climate change challenge, rebuilding from coronavirus, next year’s local council elections and their commitment to a second independence referendum.

Conservative MSP compares ‘giant leap forward’ message to Mao

Donald Cameron, Scottish Conservative Shadow Cabinet Secretary for the Constitution, has likened the SNP’s call for Scots to take one ‘giant leap forward’ to the same slogan used by Mao Zedong.

Mr Cameron said: “The SNP deputy should be ashamed of himself for saying that ‘ordinary voters’ were easily ‘confused and cowed’ by big decisions about the future of the country.

“Branding the majority of Scotland stupid is a strange way to reach out to everyone who voted No in 2014.

“Keith Brown should apologise for talking down to the two million Scots who rejected his bid to break up the country.

“As if that wasn’t bad enough, he doesn’t seem to realise that calling for a ‘giant leap forward’ copies a slogan from one of the worst authoritarian regimes the world has known.

It hasn’t even officially begun and already, SNP conference is off to a bad start.”
