Should Mark Field be sacked for taking on Greenpeace protester? Vote in our poll
The Foreign Office minister is facing a police inquiry after he grabbed the Greenpeace activist, who was part of a demonstration interrupting Chancellor Philip Hammond’s speech at Mansion House. In footage of the incident, the MP for Cities of London and Westminster can be seen getting from his seat to grab the woman and roughly push her against a column before ejecting her from the black-tie dinner. With one hand firmly clamped to the back of the woman’s neck, Mr Field uses his other hand to push her out of the room.
Mr Field has apologised for “grabbing her” – but said he believed the campaigner could have been armed.
The Tory MP’s actions have been slammed by some while others have leapt to his defence.
The woman, wearing a dress, was one of dozens of activists who tried to stop Mr Hammond during his speech to City workers.
One of the women shouted: “This is a climate emergency, Mr Hammond. Emergency, this is an emergency!”
Mr Hammond used his address to speak about the state of the UK economy.
He was advised to stop speaking as the women interrupted the event.
After the protesters were ejected from the room, Mr Hammond told guests: “The irony, of course, is that this is the government that has just led the world by committing to a zero carbon economy by 2050.”
His comments were met with applause from diners.
On Thursday, police began investigating after receiving reports of an alleged assault.
