Scotland has voted in its parliamentary elections and the results are expected in the coming hours and days. The traditional overnight ballot count has been suspended due to the coronavirus crisis, with counting now underway and the first results beginning to come in.

Results from 48 constituencies are expected today, Friday, May 7, with additional constituencies expected tomorrow.

Regional lists will also be announced tomorrow.

The full result for Scotland is expected by Saturday evening.

A record number of voters had already cast their ballots via postal voting before the polls opened on Thursday morning.

More than a million Scots registered for postal ballots.

The Liberal Democrats have comfortably held the Orkney constituency, which announced its result at about 13:10.

Next, the SNP have held Aberdeen Donside.

The Western Isles have also been held by the SNP this afternoon.

When will the winner be announced?

The full results are not expected until Saturday evening.

The SNP are largely predicted to retain most of the seats they currently have, but are pushing for a majority.

Nicola Sturgeon’s party need 65 seats in the Scottish parliament to have a majority.

The party has formed the Scottish Government since 2007, and is expected to once again finish as the largest party in Scotland.

Constituencies expected to be announced today include eight of the SNP’s top ten target seats.

These include the Labour defences of Dumbarton, Edinburgh Southern and East Lothian, none of which have a majority exceeding 3 percent.

As well as this, they are also targeting Conservative seats in Ayr, Edinburgh Central, Dumfriesshire and Eastwood.

In the last 2016 election, the SNP won 63 of 129 seats, just short of a majority.

Scottish Conservatives came second on 31, Scottish Labour won 24 seats, the Scottish Greens six seats and the Scottish Liberal Democrats won five seats.

As there has been no exit poll this year due to coronavirus, the upcoming result is less difficult to predict than previous elections.
