Sajid Javid hits out at Trump’s ‘open racism’ in attack on ‘extremists driving divisions’
Speaking to civil society groups, charities and academics this morning, the home Secretary warned of political discourse “becoming less constructive”.
His remarks follow Mr Trump launching an incendiary attack on four female congresswomen who he called to “go back” to where they “originally came from”.
The four women – known as “the squad” – have been critical of the President’s policies.
Ilhan Omar, 37, Rashida Tlaib, 42, Ayanna Pressley, 45, and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, 29, are all US citizens with three of the four born in America.
In his speech on extremism, Mr Javid directly addressed Mr Trump’s remarks.
He said: “I’m from an immigrant family, I know what it’s like to be told to go back to where I came from.
“We must confront the myths about immigration that extremists use to drive divisions.
“We know the scale is exaggerated to stoke up fear and that they use immigration as a proxy for race.”
