A Question Time audience member in Westminster called for Prime Minister Liz Truss to hold a general election to determine if she still had a mandate to lead this country. She made the claim after suggesting Ms Truss had veered away from the Tory manifesto promises of 2019 when Boris Johnson won a landslide victory at the polls.

Question Time on Thursday night took place in Westminster, right on Parliament’s doorstep in central London.

Joining host Fiona Bruce on the panel was the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster Nadhim Zahawi MP, Labour’s Shadow Levelling Up Secretary Lisa Nandy MP, actor Brian Cox, journalist Piers Morgan and renowned businessman Wilfred Emmanuel-Jones.

When given the opportunity to speak on camera, a woman in the audience said about Ms Truss: “I was just going to say that she was elected by a very small minority of the population.

“She’s being bold, she’s moving away from the Conservative manifesto of 2019.

“Isn’t it time that the country had a choice?”

Ms Bruce then questioned whether the woman believed the Prime Minister had a mandate.

She replied: “I don’t think she has a mandate.

“If she has got a mandate then she should be brave enough to have it tested with the electorate.”

Mr Zahawi attempted to dismiss these concerns but noticeably struggled to answer the question.

He said: “First of all we have a democracy where a leader was elected but that leader is then removed, we have a process.

“Liz stood on an agenda that she’s delivering.”

Former Culture Secretary Nadine Dorries said earlier that she also did not believe Ms Truss had a mandate.

Her words were read out by Fiona Bruce: “We have no mandate from the people to do this [eg what the Government are currently proposing].

“People voted in 2019 on the policy promises we made.

“If we don’t want to deliver on the deal we need a fresh mandate.”
