Priti Patel lashed out at the BBC on Sky News as she launched a takedown of the corporation. She told viewers how the reputation of the BBC “has been compromised” and the corporation must now “rebuild” and “learn lessons” from the damage caused. Her comments follow the seismic fallout from the scathing Lord Dyson review which found Martin Bashir and the BBC had been “deceitful” and “covered up” their tactics to secure the Panorama with Princess Diana.

The Home Secretary said: “The BBC itself, its reputation has been compromised, it is being questioned right now.

“And they themselves will have to reflect upon the report.

“And spend a great deal of time looking at how they can regain and rebuild.

“Confidence and trust of the British public but also they are a world-class institution.”

Ms Patel added: “So they will have a great deal of work to do in this particular area.

“And of course right now it is a very very important time for the BBC to very much looks at itself

“And learn some very valuable and very significant lessons post the publication of this report.

“At this stage, we are focused on the hurt and the damage that this report has highlighted.”
