Following a record breaking number of migrant crossings this year, Priti Patel held an online talk with her French counterparts this week and put pressure on Paris to ramp up efforts to intercept every single migrant crossing the Channel.
Ms Patel pledged to stop ‘100 percent’ of migrant crossings after holding the online talks last night, but announced she had cancelled a trip to meet Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin in person on Tuesday.
After the talks, Miss Patel and Mr Darmanin said: “Tonight, the Home Secretary spoke to her French counterpart Gerald Darmanin to discuss the problem of small boats crossing the Channel and the operational response to it.
“Both the Home Secretary and Interior Minister agreed to strengthen operational cooperation further. More must be done to stop the dangerous crossings.
“They agreed to accelerate the delivery of the commitments made in the joint agreement of July 2021 to deliver on their joint determination to prevent 100 per cent of crossings and make this deadly route unviable.”
In a joint statement released by the Home Office, the Home secretary revealed she had cancelled her trip to Paris on Tuesday so that she could be briefed on the Liverpool bombing.
The UK’s terror threat level has increased to “severe” following an emergency COBRA meeting at Downing Street on Monday.
The Prime Minister has been warned another attack on British soil is now “highly likely.”
Despite November’s weather conditions, last week saw a record 1,185 migrants reach UK shores on Thursday.
Thousands of migrants are staying at the squalid new migrant camp run by armed traffickers.
Although Brexit Britain sent France the first instalment of £54million to help fund their surveillance missions, French authorities intercepted only 99 out of the 1,284 people who attempted to cross the Channel.
The total number of migrants who have made the perilous 22-mile journey this year so far has now risen to more than 23,500.
The figure is three times more than the 8,417 who crossed in 2020.

In a statement issued to the Telegraph, Priti Patel said last week’s migrant crossing showed “we must do more”.
Ms Patel, who succeeded Sajid Javid at the Home Office after Boris Johnson became Prime Minister in the summer of 2019, added: “I want to go further and faster and that’s why I will be holding talks with Monsieur Darmanin this week.”
The readout continued: “There is no single solution to this global crisis, but I am clear that through our New Plan for Immigration and our partnership with the French, we will together break this business model and stop vulnerable people putting themselves in the hands of vile criminals, and their lives at risk.”
YouGov’s poll tracker shows immigration and asylum is the fifth most important issue for British voters at 21 percent.
