Boris Johnson became Prime Minister in 2019 before his downfall this year, and a Government source has now been reported saying there is a desire to see Mr Johnson honoured with a place in the House of Lords. The source reportedly said: “Definitely. Boris delivered Brexit. He’s taken us through Covid. People have gone into the House of Lords who have done far less. I would definitely support him getting a peerage.”

Polling by Ipsos shows 40 percent of Tory voters want the outgoing Prime Minister to be honoured with a peerage, while, just 32 percent opposed this idea.

A Conservative MP said: “The members think that we have gone bonkers. It’s madness – collective madness.”

However, among the wider public, just 28 percent support Mr Johnson receiving a peerage and 44 percent are opposed.

During the reign of Queen Elizabeth II, seven former prime ministers have gone on to enter the House of Lords.

Most recently, Margaret Thatcher was given a life peerage as Baroness Thatcher in 1992.

It is conventional for outgoing prime ministers to put forward a resignation honour list.

Mr Johnson has already entailed 86 bringing the tidal sitting members in the House of Lords to more than 800 and his resignation list could add as many as 30 more.

The Lord Speaker warned on Monday, July 25, that Mr Johnson’s plans risk undermining “public confidence in our parliamentary system”.

Lord McFall of Alcluith wrote to both Tory leadership hopefuls Liz Truss and Rishi Sunak urging them not to follow Mr Johnson’s approach.

In his letter, McFall said: “A House of Lords that is too big, combined with the fact that some recently appointed members have not been especially active, undermines public confidence in our parliamentary system. 

“I am sure you agree that public trust in politics and in our parliament and constitution is crucial going forward.”

A Government spokesman said on Sunday, July 24: “Given retirements and departures, new members of the Lords continue to be needed. 

“It is entirely proper for a prime minister and opposition parties to put forward names for a political peerage list.”
