POLL: Is Brexit at risk if Tories lose next election?

Brexiteers crowd fund for new documentary to take on Rejoiners

Deputy chairman of the Conservative Party Lee Anderson has warned that Labour ousting the Tories at the next general election puts Brexit at risk.

He claimed that Sir Keir Starmer would “drag the UK back into the EU” and that only the Conservative Party can “keep Brexit safe”.

He told the Daily Express: “If Sir Keir gets his hands on the keys to No10 he would drag the UK back into the EU.

“He may say he respects Brexit, but as we already know he always breaks his promises.

“After all, this is the same man who campaigned for a second referendum and wants to reopen negotiations with the EU. Only the Conservatives respect the will of the people and can keep Brexit safe.”

Labour said it would not form a coalition government with the Scottish National Party after the next election.

But during a round of broadcast interviews on Tuesday, Sir Keir did not rule out making a deal with the Liberal Democrats.

Labour and the Lib Dems have called for the UK to have a closer trading relationship with the EU. However, the Lib Dems ultimately want to rejoin the bloc’s single market — something Labour has ruled out.

Sir Ed Davey’s Party could demand a referendum on rejoining the bloc as a condition of entering a coalition with Labour.

Former Tory cabinet minister Simon Clarke told the Daily Express: “The Lib Dems’ cynicism knows no bounds. I am in no doubt that in the event of a hung parliament, they would seek to overturn Brexit as the price of a coalition with Labour — a deal which many Labour MPs would be quietly delighted to do.

“We should all be in no doubt that such a coalition would overturn everything the British people voted for in 2019 and betray the vote of the left-behind communities of this country that the Liberal Democrats so despise.”
