The former communications guru for Tony Blair was campaigning in Hartlepool ahead of Thursday election when he was approached by TimesRadio host Tom Newton Dunn. The constituency’s former MP was asked how he would react if Sir Keir Starmer failed to keep the “red wall” seat from going over to the Conservatives. Mr Mandelson admitted losing Hartlepool, which has been a long time Labour stronghold, would send him into “meltdown.”

Mr Mandelson told TimesRadio: “If Hartlepoole turns blue I will go into a meltdown.

“That is what is says about me that’s all I know.”

Mr Newton Dunn asked: “Is that a promise?”

“That’s a promise,” replied the former Labour spin doctor.”

The exchange comes as polling shows Sir Keir his heading for a heavy defeat in Hartlepool.

A poll by Survation has the seat turning blue for the first time in 62 years with  Tory candidate Jill Mortimer predicted to pick up 49 percent of the votes.

Left-wing commentary Owen Jones has described the prospect of losing Hartlepool as “absolutely catastrophic.”

He tweeted: “Labour won that seat twice under Corbyn. In 2017 Labour’s vote share not only increased – the party won its biggest majority there since 2001.
