The Vaccine Minister was put on the spot to clarify how funds for the Prime Minister’s lavish home improvements were obtained. ITV’s Political editor Robert Peston demanded to know the details of how Mr Johnson was able to borrow cash from the Tory Party in order to pay for the new furnishings and wallpaper at his Downing Street flat. When Mr Zahawi attempted to deflect the discussion onto Labour and Keir Starmer, Mr Peston erupted and cut him off, demanding he: “Answer the questions!”

“Why won’t [the PM] give us the details,” demanded Mr Peston.

Mr Zahawi began his answer by pointing to the ITV presenter’s previous interview with the Labour leader, calling the fact Sir Keir did not make any policy offers during his ten-minute segment “extraordinary.”

However, Mr Peston was not to be distracted from his line of questioning over Boris Johnson’s apartment refit.

He snapped at the minister: “You have made your political point, but answer the question!”

“If he did nothing wrong,” pressed the ITV host.

“Why won’t he give us the details?”

“First of all he has explained this soo many times,” began Mr Zahawi before he was cut-off.

“Most of us can say how we paid for a paint job or a sofa,” interrupted Mr Peston.
