On the First of April we were reminded how Brexit has made fools of everyone

On the First of April we were reminded yet again how Brexit has made fools of everyone.

Having demanded the right to take control of the process MPs have found it as difficult as Theresa May to break the deadlock.

The indicative votes only indicated there is no majority for any form of Brexit.

This is not quite the end of the process.

They will seek to have another go on Wednesday in the vain attempt to reach a consensus.

There is still a possibility that Ken Clarke's plan for a customs union, which lost by only three votes, could win the day.

So far the exercise has only proved to underline how the toxin of Brexit has now entered the bloodstream of the two major parties, poisoning friendships and sapping traditional loyalties.

You could say MPs have finally proved they are in touch with the rest of the country – they are as divided on the issue as anyone else.

Mrs May will no doubt have greeted the results with a wry smile.

Her deal is not the only unpopular option on the table.

But the Prime Minister still appears to have no plan for delivering a Brexit that can command the support of MPs.

The chance of getting her deal through at a fourth attempt remains close to zero while the DUP refuses to budge and a diehard group of Tory Brexiteers refuse to take yes for an answer.

Mrs May can neither tack towards a softer Brexit because it would split her party nor can she allow a no deal Brexit because it would provoke a Cabinet revolt.

A general election could either see Jeremy Corbyn in Downing Street or return another hung Parliament still unable to solve the Brexit riddle.

There are no good choices facing the Prime Minister. Whichever one she chooses will come with a hefty political price.
