Ms Gray’s report is expected to be published next week, although the exact date is not yet fixed. Contributing to the uncertainty of its publication is a continued stream of new allegations that must be figured into the scope of the report.

The main goal of the report was, in the Cabinet Office’s words, to: “Establish swiftly a general understanding of the nature of the gatherings, including attendance, the setting and the purpose, with reference to adherence to the guidance in place at the time.”

The investigation was originally launched to cover the period from November 27 to December 18, 2020.

This was extended to cover two parties, taking place on the eve of Prince Philip’s funeral on April 16, 2020.

The scope of the investigation adds: “Where there are credible allegations relating to other gatherings, these may be investigated.”

Sources speaking to Sky News’ deputy political editor, Sam Coates, have now revealed a deep sense of unease ahead of the outcome of the report in the next week.

They told Mr Coates that a number of Downing Street officials are worried that damaging evidence may be unearthed in the inquiry, and doubt that it will “clear” the Prime Minister when made public.
