No-confidence vote in Boris Johnson called “within days” of Parliament’s return
Labour have said they will call a no confidence vote of no confidence in Boris Johnson "within days" when MPs return in September.
Rebecca Long Bailey set out the party's plans as she issued a plea to Jo Swinson to back Labour's calls for a temporary government to fight a no-deal Brexit.
Jeremy Corbyn sent a letter calling for the other opposition leaders – and some senior Tory backbenchers committed to thwarting no-deal – to help install him as a caretaker leader.
But Ms Swinson had dismissed Mr Corbyn's letter calling for parties to work together as a "nonsense".
Ms Long-Bailey said: "I think it is sad Jo has made those comments, but I wouldn't close the door completely."
She added: "We have to work together, even if we don't like what each other says a lot of the time, but we have to stop no-deal. It's as simple as that, because we know the damage that could be caused is unfathomable."
Speaking on BBC Radio 4's Today programme, Ms Long-Bailey said: "What I would say is issue a plea to Jo Swinson particularly.
"I know that Jo wants to avoid a no-deal situation, as we do, and we think this is the simplest and most democratic way of doing that.
"This isn't an issue about personalities and politics, it's not about implementing Labour policy; it's about avoiding a no-deal situation arising and ensuring that a general election is called so, ultimately, the people can decide which government they want."
Time is running out for any attempt to oust Boris Johnson ahead of no-deal.
And there is concern that the PM could call a general election after the UK has left the EU.
In his letter to the opposition parties Mr Corbyn said he would seek to call a no-confidence vote at the "earliest opportunity when we can be confident of success".
