‘NO chance!’ Britain will NEVER rejoin the EU despite Guy Verhofstadt plot – poll

Brexit: Expert discusses Nissan’s comments on trade deal

The UK finally delivered Brexit on December 31, 2020, more than four years after 17.4 million people voted to leave the European Union. Boris Johnson sealed the UK’s departure from the bloc with a lucrative Trade and Corporation Agreement worth more than £600billion to the British economy. But, less than a month after the Brexit transition period finished, Rejoiners have already called for the UK to sign back up to the EU27 – including its single market and customs union.

Lord Adonis and EU chief Guy Verhofstadt have been leading the charge, meanwhile many Rejoiners have been flooding Twitter this week with the hashtag #RejoinEU.

However, a poll of more than 24,000 Express.co.uk readers has found the overwhelming majority believe Britain should remain as an independent sovereign nation.

The survey carried from 8.46am on Friday January 22 to 8.00am on Saturday January 23, asked 24,364 Express.co.uk readers, do you think the UK will rejoin the EU?

A huge 87 percent (21,388) of readers thought the UK would not sign back up as an EU member state and voted “no”.

Just 12 percent (2,727) believed the UK would eventually reverse Brexit and voted “yes”.

Meanwhile, one percent (249) remained unsure and said they did not know.

A number of passionate Express.co.uk readers let their feelings known in the comments section of the poll.

One reader said: “The British People will never never rejoin the EU. The people will make sure of that, we do not want anything to do with the EU.”

A second wrote: “The UK will NEVER SURRENDER its new found FREEDOM to the EU again. We have fought too hard for it. So dream on you who wish to return to the EU.”

A third commented: “Remainers lost the referendum and the general election last year which was based on Brexit yet they still cannot accept the majority of the UK won.

“There isn’t a party in Parliament willing to back their cause. The UK has left the EU get over yourselves.”

Meanwhile, a fourth simply said: “Rejoin the EU? No chance.”

The survey came after Labour peer Lord Adonis insisted the country will be dragged back into the bloc.

Writing on Twitter, he heaped praise on a speech made by the EU’s former Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier after he won European of the Year 2020 by European Movement Ireland.

Lord Adonis said: “Very good speech. The EU is Europe’s destiny and England will rejoin when our nation regains good leadership.”

Earlier this week, anti-Brexit author A C Grayling demanded the UK immediately rejoin the single market and customs union.

In a post on Twitter, he wrote: “It’s obvious: at very least, & immediately, we need to rejoin the Single Market & the Customs Union.

“Brexit is proving to be the disaster predicted – & worse.”

On January 1 – the first official day of Brexit – Belgian MEP Guy Verhofstadt claimed young people in the UK would take Britain back into the EU.

He said: “My ‘final’ word on Brexit. Democracy is a way to start anew, time and again. To change your mind, when facts change.

“Young generations will eventually find their way back to Europe…”
