Mercer pays gushing tribute to wife after ‘brutal week’ with Vorderman spat
Carol Vorderman claims Johnny Mercer’s wife ‘harassed’ her
Johnny Mercer paid a gushing tribute to his wife as he admitted to having a “brutal week”.
The Tory minister and Felicity Cornelius-Mercer have been embroiled in a Twitter spat with Carol Vorderman.
The former Countdown star, who is a vocal critic of the Conservatives, has taken aim at Mr Mercer over his comments that military personnel should not be using food banks.
Ms Vorderman has also hit out at Mrs Cornelius-Mercer’s salary for managing his office branding the couple “grifters”.
Taking to Twitter today, Mr Mercer said: “I love my missus and I’m super proud of her. She’s far better than me, and pours her soul into Plymouth. Proud she works for me, proud we get to do this together. Thanks for all your support to her.”

In a comment piece for Plymouth Live, Mr Mercer admitted it has been a “pretty brutal week”.
He said: “Politics is a rough game, deliberate misrepresentation and misinterpretation of what you say is now commonplace, and I must do more to keep a positive attitude towards it and keep going on all the things we have achieved for Plymouth over the years.
“I’ve learned that people aren’t stupid, and will make up their own minds about me.
“Not a single person has said anything negative to me in public at all. Not one. Online hate is just that – online, and damaging, but also not real.”
The Twitter feud has seen Mr Mercer brand Ms Vorderman “grim” and a “deeply unpleasant person” after she seized on his foodbank comments.

Meanwhile, Mrs Cornelius-Mercer accused the former Countdown star of being a “celebrity attack dog” and “inciting people to hate all Tories” during an appearance on Rachel Johnson’s Difficult Women podcast earlier this month.
The row made it to the Commons on Tuesday when a Conservative MP accused Ms Vorderman of “snobbery” over her remarks about the Mercers not having degrees.
Ms Vorderman had shared an Electoral Calculus prediction and said of the couple: “Plymouth Moor View predicted Labour win at GE. Gosh, what are arrogant Johnny Mercer and his wife going to do for a joint income of £160,000+ plus enormous expenses?
“Not a degree in sight in spite of expensive private education! So who’d employ them?”
In the latest exchange, Ms Vorderman accused Mr Mercer’s wife of “harassing me for months on Twitter”.
The former Countdown presenter shared a reel of tweets she had been tagged in by Mrs Cornelius-Mercer.
She wrote: “I’ve been harassed by Johnny Mercer’s wife for months. This is from just one day in April and much more abuse elsewhere. I didn’t respond at all. Until he mocked military using food banks. She’s paid c£45k on MP expenses (+200 percent pay rise) to do this?”
But Mrs Cornelius-Mercer insisted she was only tagging Ms Vorderman in tweets to show the “hateful comments” sent to her as a result of the celebrity’s anti-Tory rants.
