The polls have closed in London and the counting is now underway as London elects a Mayor after a year’s delay due to the coronavirus crisis. Millions of Londoners in Thursday’s elections – the UK’s first major democratic exercise since the country was hit by coronavirus in March 2020.

Counting began at 7am this morning to elect the next Mayor of London, with the two key players, Sadiq Khan of Labour and Shaun Bailey of the Conservatives both vying it out for London’s top seat.

Mr Khan is running for reelection, with polls in the final days leading up to the vote suggesting he has a firm lead over Mr Bailey.

London election results LIVE – Latest updates…

Londoners have indicated both a first and second preference for Mayor of London on their ballots.

If no candidate gets at least 50 percent of first preference votes, all but the top two candidates are then eliminated, and counting of second preference votes begins.

Low turnout has already been reported by candidates at polling stations, thought to be down to a combination of coronavirus fears and lacklustre campaigns from all sides.

When are results expected?

This year the count will take place over two days to ensure it can be done safely and social distancing guidelines can be followed.

Results are expected in full by the end of the day on Saturday at the earliest, but could also come on Sunday morning.

Estimated declaration times have come with a warning they could be taken only as a rough guide and are subject to change.

Who is most likely to win?

Labour’s Sadiq Khan is most likely to spend another term as London Mayor according to the most recent polls.

A London Labour source said: “While we are hopeful Londoners have chosen to re-elect Sadiq as their mayor, we remain concerned that turnout combined with voters believing they can afford to put smaller parties first without consequence, means it is not impossible that the Tories sneak over the line.”

The winner will serve a three-year term at City Hall after the election scheduled for May 2020 was postponed by the coronavirus lockdown.
