Liz Truss has set out to charm US tech pioneers with a pitch about how a future UK-US free trade agreement could become the gold standard for global digital trade. During the five-day tour, the International Trade Secretary is due to meet Silicon Valley businesses and investors to discuss opportunities for Global Britain after Brexit.

Ms Truss has refused to be tied down to a timeline for negotiations but has hailed “huge opportunities” for closer cooperation between Washington DC and London on trade.

She told Bloomberg: “I have never set a deadline for any trade negotiation because the important thing is to get the right deal that works for both countries.

“I think there is a huge amount that we can do together.

“The US is the UK’s single largest trading partner, a million Brits work in the US, a million US citizens work in the UK…work for UK business so there are huge opportunities to build a closer relationship.”

“Meeting politicians on the West Coast as well.

“But I am interested in getting the right deal that suits both of our countries rather than being in a hurry to do it,” added Ms Truss.
