Political journalist Kirsty Buchanan has backed Liz Truss to succeed Boris Johnson as Prime Minister at some point in the future, suggesting that she has all the credentials to lead Britain. Ms Truss was tasked by Mr Johnson to oversee Brexit negotiations with the EU following Lord David Frost’s impromptu shock resignation on Saturday night. And her former adviser special adviser firmly believes that she could be the future ace up Britain’s sleeve once Mr Johnson is gone.

Ms Truss, who will stay on as foreign secretary, has a wealth of experience in the field having occupied the role of international trade secretary in the past.

During her time as foreign secretary she has had a particular focus on striking post-Brexit deals with foreign countries.

But while she successfully pulled off a trade deal with Australia, she has so far failed to repeat the feat with the US as her attentions now to switch to the European Union.

Ms Buchanan raved about Ms Truss in a column she wrote in the Sunday Times yesterday, describing her as someone who is “made of sterner stuff” and “thick-skinned”.”

In the article she also offered revealing insights into what it’s like to work with Britain’s new chief Brexit negotiatior.

Talking to Mr Johnson’s sister Rachel on LBC, Ms Buchanan spoke of her popularity among other MP’s but feels that, despite Mr Johnson’s falling popularity and the strained relationships with a majority of the Tories in his Cabinet, the time may not be quite right now for her to take the next step just yet.

She said: “I think there are those around her that see her as a future Prime Minister.

“They say that she is very loyal to the Prime Minister.

Liz Truss to take on role as chief Brexit negotiator

“She was the first Cabinet Minister to come out and support his leadership bidding in 2019.

“But I think there is a feeling there that this isn’t quite the right time for her.

“But yeah, I get a distinct impression that [she can be a future PM]”

Ms Buchanan nodded convincingly when Ms Johnson asked her if taking over the Brexit brief has moved her a step closer to a future as Prime Minister.

Lord Frost stepped down with “immediate effect” on Saturday evening even though his departure was scheduled for January.

Ms Truss now finds herself in the privileged position of being the UK’s foreign secretary, the minister for women and equalities all while overseeing Britain’s post-Brexit talks with the EU.

In a statement, Number 10 said that she will become “lead negotiator with the EU on the Northern Ireland Protocol and have ministerial responsibility for the UK’s relationship with the European Union with immediate effect”.
