PMQs: Johnson says Starmer wanted to stay in EU drugs agency

Keir Starmer was embarrassed at Prime Minister’s Questions today as it was revealed he supported the UK to remain part of the European Medicines Agency which would have been a vaccination programme disaster. The EU’s rollout of the vaccine has been met with many bumps in the road as the bloc attempts to secure supplies for its members. The UK’s programme is one the best in the world due to the country’s ability to secure vaccination contracts more freely than if they were part of the Medicines Agency. 

Keir Starmer presented the point to the Prime Minister that schools were shut but borders were open which allowed foreign variants to enter the country. 

He asked Boris Johnson why does he think the virus will only come into the country via direct flight since current rules ban travel from certain countries. 

The Prime Minister reiterated the current rules where those travelling into the country would require a negative test taken 72-hours before and would still require to quarantine on arrival. 

Mr Johnson then said the Labour position was all over the place since it demands borders are open for freight but also calls for their closure.

Boris Johnson then said: “And if we had listened to the right honourable gentleman we would have still been at the starting blocks because he wanted to stay in the European Medicines Agency and said so four times from that dispatch box.”

The Labour leader replied: “Nonsense, don’t let the truth get in the way of the pre-prepared gag, the Prime Minister knows I never said that from this dispatch box or anywhere else but the truth escapes him.”
