Meetings between Boris Johnson and Joe Biden have appeared to get off on a positive note as the two leaders have been discussing the COVID-19 pandemic. He said the UK and US are pooling resources to tackle the pandemic and drew comparisons to joint military ventures in Iraq and Afghanistan. It comes as the UK and US come under mounting pressure to share vaccine supplies with the world as they begin to reopen following a successful vaccination programme.

Speaking at a press conference ahead of the g7 summit this weekend, Mr Biden laid on the praise to Boris Johnson and the UK Government. 

He said: “In addition, I’d like to point out that the greet from the British government has been exemplary. 

“We’ve had a good first full day here in the UK, Prime Minister Johnson and I had a very productive meeting.

“We discharged and discussed a broad range of issues on which the United Kingdom and the United States are working in very close cooperation.

“We affirmed the special relationship between our people, and we knew our commitment to defending the democratic values of our partnership.”

Mr Biden then discussed how the UK and US have historically stood side by side on several global issues.

He added: “We’re now coordinating our withdrawal [from the pandemic] together and of course to talk about how our two nations can together lead the fight against COVID-19. 

“That’s been a major focus of the G7 under British leadership, particularly in focussing and coordinating our resources to help vaccinate the world.”

Political pundits have highlighted potential tension between Mr Biden and Mr Johnson as the two disagree over Brexit. 

Mr Biden wants to uphold the Northern Ireland Protocol as he believes it will protect the Good Friday Agreement. 

The US President has also been a vocal critic of Brexit generally.
