Jo Swinson hits back after Emily Thornberry brands Lib Dems ‘kind of Taliban’
Jo Swinson has hit back at Labour's Emily Thornberry after she branded the Lib Dems 'kind of Taliban' over their Brexit policy.
The Lib Dem leader has called for Brexit to be cancelled rather than holding a second referendum.
Shadow foreign secretary Emily Thornberry said the approach was anti-democratic, as she expressed her hope that Labour would campaign to Remain in another vote.
Her comments ahead of the Labour party conference came after Ms Swinson vowed to immediately revoke Article 50 if her party gained power.
In response to the Labour frontbencher, Ms Swinson said: "Comparing a UK political party to the Taliban is ludicrous.
"Emily is the shadow foreign secretary, and should use language that reflects the importance of that role."
Lib Dem foreign affairs spokesman Chuka Umunna called on Ms Thornberry to withdraw her "inappropriate remarks".
"Language counts – comparing the Liberal Democrats to a murderous organisation is no laughing matter," he said. "It is also grossly insulting to the six million people who signed the revoke Article 50 petition launched earlier this year, including many of the shadow cabinet's constituents."
Ms Thornberry told The House magazine: "The Lib Dems have gotten kind of Taliban, haven't they? They've said they're just going to revoke, there's not going to be another referendum.
"I don't think it's very democratic to seek to overturn a referendum without asking the people first.
"I really think the only democratic way to get through this and to break the logjam is to go back to the people and trust their good sense."
