‘It makes no sense!’ Labour’s quarantine plan torn apart for targeting Covid-free nations

Sky News host grills Michelle Donelan on coronavirus variants

Nick Thomas-Symonds told the BBC’s Today Programme that under his party’s proposal arrivals in the UK from New Zealand and the currently Covid-free Isle of Man would be expected to go into a quarantine hotel for 10 days. Mishal Husain blasted the plan, telling the Shadow Home Secretary that it did not make sense.

Ms Husain asked: “You would put arrival from New Zealand and the Isle of Man which is now Covid-free into hotels for 10 days?”

The Labour MP said: “It is not countries that transmit the virus it is people.

“We have to make sure that we have those comprehensive measures in place.

“It is so vital to do it and I find it very frustrating that the Government does not see that urgency.”

The Today Programme host replied: “Is that a yes that you would do it for New Zealand and the Isle of Man?”

Mr Thomas-Symonds said: “Yes, it would be a comprehensive hotel quarantine policy.”

Ms Husain responded: “But it makes no sense for somewhere like the Isle of Man which is Covid-free right now.”

The Labour MP added: “It has to be comprehensive and across the board.”
