The climate change group – which is campaigning “to force the Government to insulate Britain’s leaky homes starting with social housing” – has caused chaos across the country in recent weeks. Dozens of protesters have blocked major trunk roads including the M25 and the Port of Dover in a bid to raise awareness about their cause.

This has infuriated many motorists – some of whom have resorted to dragging the protesters off the road.

It has also come as the country is gripped by a supply chain crisis which has created shortages of everyday goods which increasingly threatens to disrupt Christmas.

In a surprise move the group announced on Friday that it was suspending its “campaign of civil resistance” until October 25.

In a public letter to the Prime Minister, it urged him to use the Cop26 summit in Glasgow to make a “meaningful statement” on insulating the UK’s housing stock.

The group urged him to “do the right thing, so we can be secure in the knowledge that our Government did everything it could to protect and defend our country”.

It added that they “would like to take this opportunity to profoundly acknowledge the disruption caused over the past five weeks”.

Speaking to Express.co.uk, a spokeswoman for the group said that should Mr Johnson not satisfy their demands, their “relentless” campaign would resume.

She said: “It is just a suspension. We are waiting to see what the Government is going to do and what announcements it is going to make and we have said if we don’t get something meaningful we will resume action.

“(We have) one aim, one tactic.

“We go and block the roads and we do it relentlessly and that is the strategy.

“If we go back to the roads I imagine we will use the same methods that we have used before.”

She claimed that she hadn’t seen “one person” who was against the aims of the group and said that their action had been successful in putting insulating housing on the agenda.

She added: “We talk about the carbon transition – they talk a lot about reducing our energy requirement but it was never talked about until we took to the streets.

“If we reduce our requirements it is so much easier to transition.”

She said the group’s three main aims were to live in “warmer healthier houses”, to stop “millions of children going cold and hungry” across the country and make it easier for the UK to transition to low carbon energy.
