Inside Boris Johnson’s Brexit bash with English sparkling wine but no champagne

There will be no champagne à la carte at tonight's soirée as the country's most exclusive Brexit party toasts leaving the European Union by going full English.

Instead, Brexiteers will be popping local sparkling wine corks and tucking into Yorkshire puddings as they celebrate Britain's exit.

Downing Street has released details of the party planned tonight for the Prime Minister's inner circle, Tory grandees and key leave campaigners.

And in keeping with Brexit's British theme it seems Boris Johnson's party will feature more Dom Cummings than Pérignon.

The guests at the official reception will include cabinet ministers, Downing Street advisers and civil servants, officials involved in the Brexit negotiations, and supporters of the 2016 campaign to leave the EU.

No10 has shared a taste of tonight's Brexit bash – and it seems Continental fare is strictly off the menu.

Guests will be served English sparkling wine and a selection of canapes including fillet of lamb on toast, Shropshire blue cheese, beef and Yorkshire pudding with horseradish sauce, mushrooms tarts and roast chicken skewers.

The French are famously protective of their prestigious wines, as only tipple from the Champagne district itself is allowed to bear the name.

But English wine producers have stepped up to the plate with sparkling to rival the French speciality.

No10 didn't expressly name which English wine label would be supplying the Brexit Day party.

But if they are looking for a homegrown bottle befitting of a special occasion, Nyetimber is said to be one of the most expensive English-produced winemakers.

The pound is looking perky on Brexit day, as the currency market responds approvingly to decisive action following another period of volatility.

The award-winning South Downs producer's prestige cuvee retails at around £150 a bottle, or £175 for Nyetimber rosé cuvee.

But if the party planners, like some analysts, are worried about Brexit Britain's economy amid uncertainty over future trade deals, they could opt to save their sterling.

Chapel Down Sparkling, which is produced in Kent, is the cheapest English bubbly on sale at Waitrose today for a tidy £13.49 a bottle.

Britain will depart the EU as the clock strikes 11pm tonight.

The PM didn't get his wish to make Big Ben bong for Brexit, after a fundraising drive was slapped down by the House of Commons.

Instead, a digital countdown clock will be projected onto No10 from 10pm, with a light show also taking place ahead of the party, as the PM delivers his Brexit speech to the nation.

Illuminations will also be projected onto the Departure for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, the Ministry of Defence, the Ministry of Justice and HM Revenue and Customs, the Cabinet Office, the Scotland Office and the Wales Office.
