Three quarters of new cases of the virus are from the mutant strain which was imported to the UK earlier this year the Health Secretary warned at a televised coronavirus briefing from Downing Street.

The seven day average for cases of the virus has risen 20.5 percent over the past week with 3,542 new cases registered over the past 24 hours.

While the number of Covid patients in hospital has dropped significantly since the peak in January, the seven day average for admissions has started to creep up again.

In total 826 people have been admitted to the NHS over the past week, a 19.9 percent rise of the seven-day average.
