‘Hunt is part of the problem’ – Boris Johnson’s ally attacks Tory leadership rival

Daniel Kawczynski, who is backing the former Mayor of London as he seeks to replace Theresa May as Prime Minister, made his remarks after Mr Hunt criticised Mr Johnson’s decision not to take part in a Sky News debate. He said: “Jeremy Hunt is a Remainer, we must not forget that. “He’s part of the problem. Why didn’t he tell Theresa May her withdrawal agreement would not get through Parliament when he had the chance?

“At the end of the day, he’s Theresa May in trousers.”

Shrewsbury and Atcham MP Mr Kawczynski said the message from the Parliamentary Party had been clear.

He explained: “The strongest possible signal has been sent that Tories want him as their leader.

“If it was 77-89 or something like that, it might be different, but he won by 160-77.

“The vast majority of the Parliamentary party has supported him.

“If we Tories as a tribe are one thing, it is that we like strong leadership.

“For somebody to have gone along with Mrs May’s disastrous deal – as Jeremy Hunt did – rules them out.

“So far the British negotiating team has been very weak – Mr Barnier and his colleagues have had them where they want them.

“If Boris Johnson becomes Prime Minister this will no longer be the case.”

Mr Johnson yesterday underlined his commitment to Brexit by saying Britain would leave by October 31 “do or die, come what may”.

Speaking at the Conservative Party’s digital hustings this evening, he said the Tories were “in crisis”, losing votes to both the Brexit Party and the Liberal Democrats.

He added: “We need to come out of the European Union on October 31 and get it done.
