Jacob Rees-Mogg pokes fun at France over the migrant crisis

Leader of the Commons Jacob Rees-Mogg, 52, appeared on BBC Newsnight with Kirsty Wark, 66, as he defended fellow Old Etonian Boris Johnson, 57, over his appearance at a Number 10 party. The Prime Minister has come under growing pressure from Conservative MPs and MSPs in Scotland, with some going on the record to say they have handed no confidence letters to chairman of the 1922 Committee Sir Graham Brady, 54.

Mr Rees-Mogg claimed: “What we are quibbling about is a very brief period of 25 minutes and the Prime Minister has said that he regrets what happened then.”

He added: “His leadership during this period of Covid has been exceptional.”

However, BBC Newsnight viewers did not seem to agree with the North East Somerset MP’s assessment on social media.

Taking to Twitter, @MissSarrah said: “A lot of people did not even get a minute to say goodbye to their loved ones.

“Not even a minute.

“So yeah, quibbling about 25 of them is very important.”

She added: “He’s having a laugh?

“Johnson’s leadership during the pandemic has been exceptional?

“Exceptionally bad!”

Another user, operating under the handle @caffreys71, highlighted ways in which they thought Mr Johnson’s leadership fell short.

He wrote: “Missing COBRA meetings, failing to provide adequate PPE, giving Covid contracts to donors illegally, not masking up when visiting hospitals, late locking down, allowing Cheltenham/UEFA matches to go ahead, not protecting care homes, attending BYOB parties.”

Despite Mr Rees-Mogg’s defence on BBC Newsnight, polling company YouGov suggests public mood has turned against the Prime Minister.

Some 56 percent of their respondents said they thought Mr Johnson should resign as Prime Minister, including 33 percent of Conservative voters and 42 percent of Brexit-backers.

In a following survey, the Labour Party opened up a 10-point lead over the Tories.

Britain Elects claims this could result in Sir Keir Starmer, 59, commanding a majority of one in the Commons.
