Mr Johnson is under pressure after new polls suggested voters are abandoning the Conservative Party. Readers were asked ‘Who would you want to replace Boris Johnson as PM?’ Out of 14,509 votes, Foreign Secretary Liz Truss is the clear winner – with 36 percent (5,233).

The Prime Minister received just 18 percent (2,623), with Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer close behind, taking 14 percent (2,077) of the vote.

Chancellor Rishi Sunak – who Piers Morgan claimed would be Prime Minister within a year – received 10 percent of votes (1,475).

Collectively, Deputy Prime Minister Dominic Raab, Health Secretary Sajid Javid, Home Secretary Priti Patel, Cop26 President Alok Sharma, former Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt and Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham received 11 percent of votes (1,592).

Around 15 percent (1,509) of people voted for “someone else” – none of the options listed – to take over from Mr Johnson.

One Express.co.uk reader, kjh1, commented: “Don’t tell me anyone voted: Keep Johnson!”

Another person, Grimreaper, added: “Replace Boris with anyone, but not another traitorous Remoaner.”

A third reader said “certainly not Rishi Sunak” who is “bent on destroying our economy”.

They added: “Liz Truss all the way.”

Many others voiced their desire for former Brexit Party leader Nigel Farage as the next leader of the country.

Jsobrazil commented: “Nigel Farage has experience fighting the EU.

“That’s my democratic choice.”

A second reader, inlovewithdemocracy, wrote: “I had to vote ‘someone else’ as Nigel Farage wasn’t on your list.

“However, as a second choice, I would go for Liz Truss.”

Another person called for Reform Party leader Richard Tice to be the next leader of the country.

SuperTrump commented: “Richard Tice should have been in that list.

“People are fed up with the Tories and want an alternative.

“Reform are going to take their place, no one in their right mind would vote Labour.

“Added to this Johnson has failed to deliver Brexit.

“He runs with the hare and hunts with the hounds. This cannot go on.”

This poll comes as the Government has recently come under fire for the handling of the Owen Paterson affair.

The Prime Minister was forced into a humiliating U-turn earlier this month over plans to prevent the former Cabinet minister’s immediate suspension for an alleged breach of lobbying rules by launching a review of the entire disciplinary system.

The debacle over Mr Paterson has been followed by revelations about MPs’ second jobs and homes.
