‘Give Chelsea owner the red card’ MP blasts Abramovich’s links to Russian state

Leaked government documents have reportedly put the billionaire close to Russian corruption and paying for political influence.

Labour MP Chris Bryant revealed the contents of a security memo about the tycoon, who is not on the UK’s sanctions list.

Reading from the classified 2019 warning, Mr Bryant told MPs: “Abramovich remains of interest due to his links to the Russian state and his public association with corrupt activity and practices. An example of this is Abramovich admitting in court proceedings that he paid for political influence.

“Therefore Her Majesty’s Government is focused on ensuring individuals linked to illicit finance and malign activity are unable to base themselves in the UK and will use the relevant tools at its disposal – including immigration powers – to prevent this.”

Mr Bryant said: “That is nearly three years ago and yet remarkably little has been done.

“Surely Mr Abramovich should no longer be able to own a football club in this country?”

Commons Leader Mark Spencer urged Mr Bryant to raise his concerns at Home Office questions on Monday.

Mr Abramovich has repeatedly refuted any suggestion that he has direct links with Putin.
