General election confirmed for December as MPs back Boris bill

The government will hold another General election in December after MPs backed a bill put forward by the Prime Minister.

An exact date has yet to be confirmed, with politicians set to decide on December 9 or 12.

MPs approved Boris Johnson's Early Parliamentary General Election Bill at second reading without a formal vote tonight.

Commons Speaker John Bercow said it was clear an "overwhelming majority" of the House of Commons support it.

The government is reportedly opposed to bringing the proposed polling date forward by three days, and sees the amendment as an attempt to sabotage an election.

The PM's official spokesman said earlier today that a December 9 election would not be "logistically possible".

An amendments which would have granted votes for 16 and 17-year-olds and EU citizens with settled status will not be debated.

A Number 10 source warned that the Government would pull the Bill if the amendments succeeded.

If the bid for a December 9 election succeeds, Parliament would have to be dissolved on Friday morning.

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn this morning announced he was backing the vote, after the EU agreed to delay Brexit until January 31 and a no-deal was ruled out.

Ahead of the vote, the bookies say the Tory party are fancied to secure a majority.

The party are odds-on at 10/11 to form a majority government by Ladbrokes, with odds of 11/10 of there being no overall majority.

Labour are held at odds of 20/1.

Jessica O'Reilly, from the betting firm, said: "The Tories currently edge the betting to win an overall majority at December's election, but it wouldn't be a huge surprise if there isn't an overall majority as the betting is incredibly tight."

The same view is held by Betfair and Coral, who fancy the party at the same odds.
