Gavin Williamson fired ‘for attacking May over diabetes’ claims insider as feud ESCALATES

One source said the former Cabinet minister spoke about Mrs May’s type 1 diabetes at a dinner and suggested she was unfit to lead the country.

An ally of Mrs May slammed Mr Williamson, saying it was “absolutely outrageous” for him to use Mrs May’s condition against her.

Mr Williamson was also accused of drawing up plans to send British troops “to invade Africa”.

When the allegations over the diabetes comments and the defence plans were put to him, the MP for South Staffordshire told Sky News: “It is absolutely crazy, on both counts.”

He added: “Of course no one has ever suggested it. Classic PM/Sedwill smear because they don’t have any evidence.”

Mr Williamson was referring to the UK’s top civil servant Sir Mark Sedwill, whom he has blamed for his firing following the Huawei leak.

The pair developed an ongoing feud after a disagreement over defence cuts.

Disgraced Mr Williamson was fired by the Prime Minister this week over the leak of information from the national security council which suggested Chinese firm Huawei would be involved in building the UK’s 5G network.

The former Tory whip was linked to the leak to the Daily Telegraph by an inquiry, reports the Daily Mail.

Mr Williamson branded the inquiry a “shabby and discredited witch hunt” and said he was consulting lawyers.

He has demanded a “full and impartial investigation” into the leak that ended his cabinet career.

Last week the Metropolitan Police said the leak did not amount to a criminal offence.

Critics are concerned over Huawei’s ties to the Chinese government, which the firm denies.
