The Prime Minister was left less than impressed when his new PR chief managed to create a number of negative headlines within just hours of starting in No10. Guto Harri, who previously worked with Mr Johnson at City Hall, left his boss the subject of ridicule after saying he was “not a total clown” in an on-the-record interview.
The media coverage that followed sparked outrage from the Prime Minister, who had brought in Mr Harri as part of a bid to reset his premiership.
Conservative MPs have been putting increasing pressure on the Prime Minister to shape up his act following the so-called Partygate saga, with Mr Johnson promising his colleagues: “I get it and I will fix it.”
It was briefed Mr Johnson was “bringing in capable, grown-up people who will make sure the machine works better” to ease the nerves of backbenchers.
Following the pledge, Mr Harri’s rocky start to his time in Downing Street is understood to have left the Prime Minister furious.
A Whitehall source told the Daily Mail the spin doctor was red the riot act by the incandescent Conservative leader.
“This is not bloody rocket science,” the source said.
“What he did [on Monday] was not helpful in the slightest.
“The PM gave it to him with both barrels on Monday afternoon, and Guto has now said he will not be talking on the record again.
“It’s fair to say the PM was not the only person he got it in the neck from.”
Mr Harri had given an interview to a Welsh language news website in which he gave a number of excruciating details about his appointment.

He said both he and Mr Johnson burst into a rendition of Gloria Gaynor’s “I will Survive” when first reunited.
“I walked in and I made a salute and said ‘Prime Minister, Guto Harri reporting for duty’ and he stood up from back to his desk and started taking the salute,” he told Golwg360.
“I asked ‘Are you going to survive Boris?‘ And he said it in his deep voice, slowly and purposefully and started singing a little while finishing the sentence and saying ‘I Will Survive’.
“Inevitably he invited me to say ‘You’ve got all your life to live’ and he replied, ‘I’ve got all my love to give’, so we had a little blast of Gloria Gaynor!”
He added that the Prime Minister is “not a complete clown”.
Walking up the cobbled street towards No10 he also joked with journalists that he had bought mineral water and healthy snacks for staff – in an apparent jibe at the alleged alcohol-heavy parties in No10.
Concerns have also been raised about his past role as a lobbyist for the Chinese company Huawei.
Huawei technology is being removed from the UK’s 5G networks by the end of 2027 following national security fears.
