ECJ 'cannot ensure' Poland will use EU funds lawfully says expert

In one of the tensest weeks on record between the EU and Warsaw, Polish prime minister Mateusz Morawiecki has accused the EU of “punishing” and “starving” his country, with threats to withhold £48billion of Covid recovery funds if they failed to bend to the EU’s will.

MEP’s were left reeling with Spain’s Sira Rego MEP accusing Poland of initiating a war over civil rights, saying they are “rebelling”.

German MEP Martin Schirdewan called for Ursula von der Layen to act and punish Poland saying “passivity from the Commission and from you Ms von der Leyen has brought us to this situation.”

Poland PM receives support elsewhere

Politico reports that while Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawieck got a hostile reception from most MEP’s he delivered a speech at a meeting of the  European Conservatives and Reformists on Tuesday afternoon which got a “rousing reception”.

The news outlet reports that one of those in the room said “he is fighting the fight for other countries now”.

When is the plenary session?

EU leaders are due to debate the crisis at a plenary session this morning at 8am. 

The meeting follows on from yesterday where leaders argued over about the supremacy of EU law.
