EU insist Juncker is in ‘full throttle’ after he’s pictured stumbling at party

EU chiefs today insisted Jean-Claude Juncker is "in full throttle" after he was pictured stumbling at a glitzy bash.

The European Commission President, 64, had to be helped to his feet during a reception at the Hofburg Palace in Vienna.

It comes months after he was seen stumbling and losing his balance before a dinner at the NATO summit in Belgium.

But the EU’s deputy chief spokeswoman Mina Andreeva insisted: "Photos sometimes lie, as they do in this case.

"The president is in full good health and in full throttle since yesterday evening."

She said Mr Juncker sometimes has pain walking as a result of serious injuries sustained in a car accident 30 years ago.

Adding she had just spoken to him, the spokeswoman said: "He’s all good."

The EU chief was pictured last night at the welcome dinner of the High-Level Forum Africa-Europe in the Austrian capital.

Later photos showed him shutting his eyes during a close hug with Estonia’s Prime Minister Juri Ratas.

He also high-fived Croatia’s leader Andrej Plenkovic across the table.

Back in July the EU chief to be helped by the leaders of Finland, Ukraine and the Netherlands as he appeared unsteady on his feet.

Mr Juncker has said he suffers from sciatica that sometimes affects his movements. And he denied claims of alcoholism in a 2016 interview where he guzzled four glasses of champagne.

He said: “You think I’d still be in office if I was having cognac for breakfast?"
