Doug Craig withdraws from PC nomination battle in Cambridge
Some of the lustre has worn off the Cambridge North Dumfries contest for the federal Progressive Conservative nomination as former Cambridge mayor Doug Craig announced that he was pulling out of the race.
The 72-year-old was set for a showdown with CTV News Kitchener reporter Tyler Calver and longtime Cambridge public school board trustee Cindy Watson.
Craig said that he will back Calver in the chase for the nomination.
“Young Conservatives everywhere are ready to lead the next generation,” he said in the statement. “We must support them; to ensure a bright and affordable future for our children and generations to follow.”
Calver and Watson are now set for a showdown with current Cambridge MP Bryan May who is a Liberal.
Craig was mayor of Cambridge from 2000 until 2018 when he was knocked off in last fall’s municipal election by former Liberal MPP Kathryn McGarry.
