Dominic Grieve reveals he will NOT stand in another general election if he loses his seat

Dominic Grieve has been the MP for Beaconsfield since 1997. However, he will run as an independent rather than a Conservative for the first time in the upcoming December general election. He told James Whale on talkRADIO: “I will fight my seat as an independent and we will see what happens.

“The electorate may decide they wish to elect a Conservative MP, they may decide they wish to elect me as an independent standing in the Conservative tradition with a small C because that’s what I am.

“It is their choice that is what democracy and Parliamentary elections are all about.”

The talkRADIO host asked: “You weren’t tempted to perhaps join the Lib Dems?”

Mr Grieve replied: “No I was not, I am very respectful of the Liberal Democrats and very grateful to them that in this particular instance they have decided not to put up a candidate against me.

“But I am perfectly aware there will be some subjects which we might well disagree and there will be many subjects on which we will agree.

“But clearly the subject that preoccupies all of us most is the future of our country in the context of Brexit and the danger that Brexit poses principally for the future of the United Kingdom.

“Which if the Prime Minister gets his way I think is in serious danger of breaking up.

“And indeed the risk that in fact the Prime Ministers deal is worthless because it will lead to us dropping out of the EU at the end of the transition period with real calamitous economic consequences.”

He continued: “I think that is a very real risk that brings us together.

“They have been kind enough to say that they will support me.

“There are some other areas of policy which we may agree on there are areas which we may have some disagreements but it allows me the opportunity to go to my constituency and offer myself for what I am.

“It is up to them whether they want me or not.”

Mr Whale then asked: “If you do not manage to retain your seat in this election, will you fight the next election after that whenever it may be?”

Dominic Grieve responded: “I think if I don’t retain my seat, I shall go off and do other things.”

Dominic Grieve has previously been critical of Conservative Party leader and Prime Minister Boris Johnson, last week he said: “I think the Prime Minister’s leadership as exhibited over the last two months has been horrific.

“A prorogation, he’s a scandal.”
