Diane Abbott blasts Tories at PMQs as she confirms 4 death threats to Labour MP

A Labour MP has received four death threats since she clashed with Boris Johnson over abuse, the Commons was told today.

Paula Sheriff tackled the Prime Minister over his language during a dramatic parliamentary showdown last week, urging him to tone down his rhetoric.

But the Conservative chief hit back by dismissing her fears as “humbug”.

Shadow Home Secretary Diane Abbott , standing in for Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn at Prime Minister’s Questions, said Ms Sherriff had “received four further death threats, some again quoting the Prime Minister’s words”.

She added: “Death threats and abuse are something that women across this House experience.”

She urged Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab – deputising for Mr Johnson, who was addressing the Tory Party conference in Manchester – to “take the opportunity to apologise on behalf of the PM for his initial dismissive response”.

The Foreign Secretary dodged apologising by condemning abuse.

Earlier, Mr Raab’s enthusiasm got the better of him as he leapt to his feet to respond to Miss Abbott after she paid tribute to British athlete Dina Asher-Smith, who won silver in the 100m sprint at the World Championships in Doha.

He gaffed again by saying the Conservatives were “on our second woman Prime Minister”, in a reference to Theresa May , who quit in July.

Mrs May, sitting two rows behind Mr Raab, smiled at the blunder.
