Keir Starmer: Government has 'serious questions' to answer

The latest poll conducted by YouGov has found the Labour Party has lost its four point lead over the Tories. The Westminster survey of 1,704 UK adults from January 4-5 found support for the Labour Party has fallen by two percentage points, with support for the Tories increasing by two points since the last poll was carried out in late December.

The results were shared on Twitter this afternoon by polling site Britain Elects and found both parties were now tied on 39 percent of the vote.

It is a stark contrast to the previous poll of 1,713 UK adults carried out on December 21-22, which had Labour on a 41 percent share on vote.

Meanwhile, Boris Johnson’s Conservatives had trailed on just 37 percent.

The latest January survey also has the Green Party and the Lib Dems tied in third on just six percent, with the Brexit Party on three percent.

A number of observers on social media criticised Sir Keir for squandering his advantage in the polls.

Reacting a post on Twitter by Britain Elects, one user said: “It seems that the more people see of Keir Starmer, the less they like.”

Another said: “This is terrible. Starmer has to go, surely.”

A third added: “Labour should try being an opposition and see if that makes any difference.”

The Prime Minister has come under severe criticism over his handling of the coronavirus pandemic with the UK plunged into a third national lockdown.

Mr Johnson has been condemned in many circles – including from the opposition benches – for failing to act quick enough to tackle COVID-19 and for making a series of last-minute U-turns.

Meanwhile, Sir Keir has faced a backlash for failing to provide a clear alternative to the Government’s position in key moments of the pandemic and has been dubbed “captain hindsight” by Mr Johnson during fiery exchanges in the Commons.

On Friday, the UK reported the highest number of coronavirus cases and deaths since the start of the pandemic.

The Department for Health confirmed another 68,053 new coronavirus cases and 1,325 deaths within 28 days of a positive COVID-19 test.

Sir Keir Starmer said the coronavirus death figures were a “tragedy”.

He added: “It was not bad luck and it was not inevitable. The Government must do everything it can to vaccinate Britain.”

Today, the UK passed the horrific milestone of three million positive coronavirus cases and 80,000 deaths since the outbreak began.

A further 59,937 positive COVID-19 cases were recorded in the past 24 hour period, with another 1,035 confirmed deaths.

The two YouGov polls were also conducted either side of the UK leaving the EU.

The previous survey was completed two days before the Prime Minister announced he had secured a post-Brexit trade deal with Brussels.

Mr Johnson confirmed the landmark agreement had been reached on December 24, which allowed the Tories to formally deliver its manifesto commitment for the UK to leave the bloc at 11pm on December 31, 2020.
