We live in uncharted territory.

As a nation, we have never been here before. And we cannot be sure, beyond hope, where or how we are going to end up.

In facing this international ­emergency we have one great strength: each other.

While normal life shuts down and we are keeping our distance physically, we can come together in so many other ways.

Coronavirus is an attack on ­humans which will only be ­defeated by acts of humanity.

It may have redrawn the map of everyday living, but in the face of a new spirit of solidarity this ­virus will be defeated.

That means a new level of ­caring and compassion.

Nobody need be alone. What you are feeling, others are too. Together we can help each other.

On this bittersweet Mother’s Day, many mums will be celebrating without their children, kids apart from their mums.

Find ways of connecting ­regardless. A voice on the phone can bring joy even at a distance. Pop by the lady down the road and make sure she is OK.

Kindness can be shown in many different ways.

The Chancellor Rishi Sunak captured the national imperative when he said: “When this is over, and it will be over, we want to look back on this moment and ­remember the many small acts of kindness done by us and to us.

“We want to look back on this time and remember how in the face of a generation-defining ­moment we undertook a collect-ive national effort and we stood together. It’s on all of us.”

It could not have been put ­better. We endorse that sentiment wholeheartedly.

The disgusting, selfish and ­immoral acts of panic buyers and profiteers are treacherous in this period of effective wartime.

Neighbours delivering ­essentials and supermarkets ­giving priority shopping time to our heroic NHS workers on the frontline are the way to go.

It will get better and we all have a massive part to play in making sure things improve as quickly as possible for as many people as possible.

As that ageless icon Dame Vera Lynn said yesterday: “Come ­together, look after one another, follow the Government’s advice – and keep smiling through.”
