Commons erupts as Theresa May mocks Soubry – ‘Whatever you’re calling yourself this week’

Theresa May faced Jeremy Corbyn for the final time at Prime Minister’s Questions today. During her final appearance as Prime Minister, Mrs May made a dig directed towards Anna Soubry’s Change UK party, while remarking on female leaders in Parliament. She was replying to newly elected Liberal Democrat leader Jo Swinson, who paid tribute to Mrs May. She said: “When I think of girls growing up in East Dunbartonshire, it is inspiring for them to see women in positions of power.

“Whether that’s First Minister of Scotland or as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.

“Can I ask the Prime Minister what advice she has for women across the country on how to deal with those men who think they could do a better job, but are not prepared to do the actual work?”

Mrs May replied: “My advice to all women is actually be true to yourself, persevere, keep going and be true to the vision that you are working for.

“But can I congratulate the right honourable lady on her election as leader of her Party. I am pleased also that we have a member representing a Scottish constituency who is a leader of a United Kingdom Party.

“I think it goes to show we are on United Kingdom and MPs from the four nations of our unions sit in this House on the basis of equality.

“Can I also say to the honourable lady that I congratulate her on becoming the first woman, I believe, to lead the Liberal Party, and as I stand down I am pleased to be able to hand the baton onto another female leader of a political party.

“But as you look around the chamber I have to say we almost have a full set.

“My party has had two women leaders, the Liberal party now has a woman later, the SNP has a woman leader, as do the DUP, Plaids and the Greens have.”

MPs erupted into laughter as Mrs May continued: “Even the Independent Tigger group Change UK, or whatever they’re calling themselves this week, are now onto their second woman leader.

“There’s only one party letting the side down, the Labour Party.”

Boris Johnson, the new Conservative leader and next Prime Minister was not in the backbenches during the leaders’ joustings.

Mr Johnson was absent so as not to overshadow Mrs May’s final appearance at PMQs.

Instead he will be putting the finishing touches to his cabinet after winning yesterday’s vote to be the new Tory leader.

Mrs May received a standing ovation as she left the chamber following today’s clash with Jeremy Corbyn.

She is now heading to Buckingham Palace to formally quit as Prime Minister.

Mr Johnson will then head to the Palace to officially be appointed by the Queen as the new leader of the United Kingdom.
