Rishi Sunak says the government ‘can’t wave a magic wand’

The Chancellor of the Exchequer told BBC Radio 4’s Today Programme that the Government are doing all they can to “mitigate” issues of shortages across Britain from fuel to food but stressed the problem is having a global impact, not just in the UK.

Mr Sunak said: “What we are seeing are disruptions to supply chains, challenges to supply chains, not just here in the UK but more broadly across the world.

“The reason for that is many countries have been locked down and we have had relatively rapid reopening of economies everywhere.

“And that has caused this disruption that we are obviously experiencing and I know it is frustrating for people.

“What I would say is, be assured, we are doing everything we can to mitigate the bits of that we can.”

Host Nick Robinson hit back: “It’s not that you’re saying you will do nothing, but you are saying ‘it’s not our fault if the shelves are empty’.”

Mr Sunak slammed: “There are things we can do and should do and it is reasonable people expect us to do what we can.

“And whether it is short-term visas or speeding up testing capacity of HGV drivers, of course, we should do all those things and we are doing all those things.

“But we can’t wave a magic wand and make global supply chain challenges disappear overnight!”
