The Government’s new Brexit legislation is due for a second reading in the House of Commons next week. The controverisal bill seeks to override parts of the withdrawal agreement between the EU and UK regarding Northern Ireland. Conservative Justice Secretary Robert Buckland warned Sky News that it would be “vitally important” for the bill to pass through the Commons and House of Lords.

He told host Sophy Ridge: “Parliament is going to be playing its full part in the debates to come about this important issue.

“That’s a vital part of our democracy and it’s an expression of parliamentary sovereignty.

“Frankly the Brexit debate has been all about that.

“I’m looking forward to carrying on engaging with colleagues in both Houses to listen to their concerns.”

Mr Buckland continued: “I believe this bill should get through, it must get through, it’s Brexit-critical.

“There are many measures in it that are vitally important for December 31.

“I very much hope that it will command the support of both Houses in the debates to come.”

After the second reading and days on the floor, the bill will go to the House of Lords before coming back to the Commons again.
