Jacob Rees-Mogg lists three ‘huge’ Brexit benefits

Thursday, June 22, marks seven years since the UK voted to leave the European Union in the Brexit referendum. This week, following the damaging Partygate report, Lord Heseltine has called for politicians to stop hiding from the damage caused by Brexit.

Writing for The Independent, he said: “There is a growing awareness of the deception that has taken place and the lies that underpinned it.”

The Remainer explained: “The Brexit case from the outset was never based on reasoned arguments or detailed policies. The diet was one of slogans interwoven with the familiar targets of the mob — the civil service, foreigners, immigrants, Brussels.

He concluded that the time has come “for the British people to be told the truth”.

However, a recent poll of Express.co.uk readers has rejected Lord Heseltine’s claims of Brexit failure.

In a poll that ran from 10.45 on Tuesday, June 20, to 2.30pm on Wednesday, June 21, Express.co.uk asked readers: “Do you agree Brexit was ‘bound to fail’ from the outset?”

A total of 10,609 votes were received with the vast majority of readers, 73 percent (7,740 people) answering “no” compared with 27 percent (2,823 people) who said “yes” in agreement. A further 46 people said they did not know.

Many readers disagreed with Lord Heseltine, with username UKForever declaring: “I think Brexit has been a great success, and so does everyone I know!”

Similarly, username boneca dismissed his comments as “usual Remainers talking rubbish”.

Meanwhile, some readers pointed out that time was needed to ensure Brexit benefits were realised. Username ducs said: “I don’t think Brexit has failed. We were always told it would take a number of years to get the full benefit, and those benefits are beginning to materialise.”

Username Brian at home agreed, commenting: “The benefits take time not just five or six years. In 20 years the UK could be well ahead of the EU in many ways.”

Others acknowledged that the success of Brexit has been impacted by the attitudes of politicians. Username SL69 said: “Leaving didn’t fail, we left. The politicians have failed to take advantage of it.”

Username mwhi agreed, writing: “Brexit is only failing because of constant sabotage from Remainers who are doing everything they can to scupper it and the total lack of any progress from this Government.”

However, a minority of readers agreed with Lord Heseltine, arguing that Brexit was set to fail, with username angrydragon describing it as “the biggest act of self-inflicted economic harm ever committed by any country”.

Another, username poubellebrittania, said: “Of course it’s failed. It was always going to do so. Brexit was a project to put up trade barriers with our largest and closest partners.”
