Brexit Party boost: Could Kate Hoey join Brexit Party after stepping down as Labour MP?
Labour MP Kate Hoey has announced she will not run as MP for her Vauxhall constituency come the next General Election. The counsellor said she would continue to aid her constituents from her current position, but would not run in 2022. Tweeting after her announcement, she said: “Whoever is fortunate enough to be the next MP for Vauxhall I wish them well”.
Kate Hoey first announced her decision to step down after the 2015 General Elections.
However, the MP said she was “persuaded” to run for the 2017 snap election, and now the Labour Party has started the process for 2022 she will no longer stand.
Ms Hoey lost a no-confidence vote from her Vauxhall constituents last year accusing her of “ignoring” constituents’ views.
Those critical of the MP said her views were much closer to those of the Conservative Party than Labour.
Could Kate Hoey join the Brexit Party?
Kate Hoey was in favour of leaving the EU, and an outspoken critic of Brussels.
She was against the EU long before the referendum came around, and voted against the Maastricht and Lisbon treaties in 1992 and 2007.
When people started to campaign in 2016, she sided with the leave vote, alongside Nigel Farage.
She joined Mr Farage on the Brexit flotilla outside Parliament, where they clashed with Bob Geldof’s pro-remain troupe.
These views put her at odds with her Vauxhall constituents, 79 percent of whom voted to remain in the EU.
When asked whether she believed the UK would be better off out of the EU, she said: “I think long term we definitely will be.
“It’s about feeling our country is able to take back to control.”
“I think we will look back [on the referendum] and say thank goodness the people on June 23, 2016, voted to leave.”
While she would be the ideal candidate for the Brexit Party, Ms Hoey did not mention her future party alignments.
In a statement, she said: “Until the next General Election I will, of course, continue every single day to give my all to help constituents in Vauxhall and to campaign for policies that make life better for residents.
“I will carry on until a General Election serving with the energy, honesty and integrity that I have tried to bring to public service my whole life.”
