Brexit LIVE: Raab’s no-deal ‘loophole’ infuriates Remainers as Adonis lashes out at BBC

The Foreign Secretary said the Benn Bill – passed by MPs to force the Government to avoid Britain leaving the EU without a Brexit deal – was “deeply flawed”. Mr Raab told the BBC Radio 4 Today Programme: “I think the precise implications the legislation need to be looked at very carefully.

“We’re doing that, but the Prime Minister’s been very clear. He wants to lead us out of the EU at the end of October, and he’s focused on getting a deal.”

This was echoed by lawyer Jolyon Maugham QC who claimed Mr Johnson could pass the Withdrawal Act by October 19 which would mean the “obligation to request an extension falls away”, according to The Sun.

But Remainers hit back, with Labour’s former Justice Secretary Lord Falconer saying the claims were “low class garbage”.

House of Commons Speaker John Bercrow told an audience at New York University: “Is a No Deal Brexit before October 31st possible?

“Well, not unless Parliament decided to change the law.

“I can’t see that happening, unless Parliament changes the law, and I don’t expect to see that happen.”

Lord Adonis tweeted: “Not good enough for BBC reporters repeatedly to say they ‘understand’ that ‘ministers believe’ that the no deal legislation has a ‘loophole’

“This is factless No 10 propaganda. BBC shouldn’t report it uncritically unless Johnson says what the loophole is. And that won’t happen.”

8.17am update: Boris accused of running ‘far-right’ Government

Boris Johnson has been accused of leading a “far-right” Government by Labour in response to his actions since becoming Prime Minister.

Shadow attorney general Baroness Chakrabarti said Mr Johnson had been “using weasel words” about how much he respects judges.

Raising concerns on how the Government will treat legislation designed to stop it forcing through a no-deal Brexit on October 31, she also told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme: “Ministers in this Johnson government, bizarre dystopian universe have now indicated that they might not even abide by the terms of that legislation.

“We’ve seen briefing from Number 10 that they might prorogue Parliament a second time to avoid the enforcement of the Benn legislation or the scrutiny of the House of Commons, and that they’re thinking of other ways to avoid that legislation.

“This is how serious things have got in this country under a far-right, outright government.”
