Tensions between France and the UK boiled during the event in Cornwall at the weekend as Mr Johnson and Mr Macron spoke about Brexit. The French leader accused the UK of stirring tensions further over the EU’s threats to ban sausages being exported foo Northern Ireland.

Mr Johnson asked Mr Macron: “How would you like it if the French courts stopped you from moving Toulouse sausages to Paris?”

He is said to have replied: “That is not a good comparison because Toulouse and Paris are in the same country.”

Hr Macron was also dealt a humiliating blow after he shared an expensive bottle of red wine with fellow G7 leaders at the weekend that was meant to be a present for US President Joe Biden.

Mr Biden reportedly had gone to bed while the other leaders stayed up.

Mr Johnson said he was a “little heavy headed” the next day, before adding the strength of the bottle was due to it being as old as when the French last won a naval battle.”

During the summit, Mr Macron also admitted the EU is “respectful of British sovereignty”, before warning the UK must “respect” the Brexit deal and all the customs checks that it comes with.

When asked about the sausage row at the end of the summit, Mr Macron said: “On that particular subject matter we all need to stay very calm”.

He added: “We can’t create polemics and disagreements when we are meeting over three days.

“Let’s not lose time in disagreements created in corridors or antechambers.”

The French leader then suggested the EU is better off without the UK.

Mr Macron said: “The EU demonstrated in the last four years that it is a political entity not just an economic entity… we can have certain interests and values we can pursue together and not be blocked by another partner.”
