Northern Ireland: Unions 'could be dislodged' says Watt

After leaving the EU the Northern Ireland Protocol was introduced, with a customs border placed between Northern Ireland and Great Britain and the country remaining part of the EU’s single market.

But the post-Brexit deal has proved contentious with Irish unionists.

After Thursday’s Stormont election in Northern Ireland, the UK and EU will resume renegotiations on the controversial Protocol.

Mr Johnson’s Government is expected to include plans in the next Queen’s Speech for a bill that gives new powers to replace parts of the Protocol unilaterally.

The bill could be introduced shortly after the opening of the new Parliamentary session or be put on hold, and could come with or without the UK having triggered Article 16 of the protocol, a clause allowing either side to suspend it, according to a UK official.

Speaking to Politico, a UK official said: “We’ve always wanted to resolve the problems by agreement with the EU but if that’s not possible and we have no choice, we need to do what we can to try to protect the Belfast / Good Friday Agreement.”

German businesses hammered by Brexit as largest Eurozone economy ‘doesn’t work smoothly’

A Gerrman minister has described the economy as “staccato” in the wake of supply issues which he blames on Brexit, coronavirus, and the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

Germany’s vice chancellor Robert Habeck has declared that the consequences of Coronavirus, Brexit and the conflict in Ukraine mean supply chains are severely impacted as Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises (SMEs) suffer. 

Germany’s SMEs tend to import raw materials, intermediate products, or services from other countries in Europe as approximately 24 percent of the 3.8 million SMEs have suppliers there.

Mr Habeck described the economy as in “staccato mode” as it has been reported by the KfW banking group that three quarters of SME manufacturing companies experience supply blockages.
