Brexit DIVIDED: Boris warns nations Brussels is BLOCKING a deal – EU unity under pressure

The prime minister spoke to Mateusz Morawiecki, Mette Frederiksen and Stefan Lofven urging them to meet him half way as October 31 draws closers. The EU rejected his proposals last week, saying they did not provide a basis for a deal, and Ireland’s leader Leo Varadkar said the offer “falls short in a number of aspects”. With just over a week to go until the EU summit on October 17-18, Mr Johnson has turned to other European leaders to gain support for a fresh deal.

The BBC tweeted: “Downing St: The Prime Minister has spoken on the phone to the Prime Ministers of Denmark, Sweden and Poland — arguing that his plan amounts to a “sensible and fair compromise,” and “to do a deal have to see movement from EU side.”

A spokesman for Mr Lofven, Sweden’s leader, described the phone call on Monday between the two men as “constructive”.

He said the leaders spoke about the importance of continued good relations between Britain and the bloc during their phone conversations.

President Macron has said the bloc will come to a decision by the end of the week on wether a deal is going to be possible.

The French leader told Mr Johnson any new agreement must “respect” EU principles during a phone call on Sunday.

The prime minister told Mr Macron he believed a deal could be struck if the bloc were willing to compromise.

A French government official said President Macron told Mr Johnson “that the negotiations should continue swiftly with Michel Barnier’s team in coming days, in order to evaluate at the end of the week whether a deal is possible that respects European Union principles”.

Mr Johnson’s chat with Ms Frederiksen comes just days after she hosted Ireland’s premier in Copenhagen for Brexit talks.

She treated Mr Varadkar to a bike ride around the Danish capital before the pair took part in a joint press conference.

Mr Varadkar hit out at Mr Johnson’s proposals, saying rhe UK still has “a long way to go” before a deal could be reached.

This is a breaking news story and is being updated.
