BBC political commentator Adam Fleming argued that the UK and EU were quickly approaching the last realistic Brexit trade deal deadline. While speaking on Politics Live, Mr Flemming explained what needed to be done by the EU and UK to implement a Brexit deal. He warned, due to the processes needed to be completed by the UK and EU, a deal must be agreed and finalised in the next two weeks.

Mr Fleming said: “I am now old enough and experienced enough of this process to be incredibly sceptical about any deadlines.

“As soon as someone says a deadline I just think I look forward to hearing that wooshing past in a few weeks time.”

Mr Flemming outlined how a Brexit deal could be finalised between the UK and EU and how quickly this would need to happen.

He said: “I think the best thing to do is work backwards, the transition period ends on the 31st of December.

“So what needs to happen before then is you need the deal to be agreed by the negotiators, it needs to be approved by EU leaders.

“They could do it at a last-minute summit, probably virtually by ZOOM as well.

“Then it needs to be approved by the British Parliament, the Commons and the Lords and probably some legislation passed.

“Then it would be the European Parliament rubber-stamping it.

“I reckon you could do that in about 2 to 3 weeks but of course you have got Christmas in the middle of that.”

He added that both sides were reaching the latest point at which a deal could be agreed.

He continued: “We are looking at the first or second week of December at the absolute latest.

“That would be leaving it very late for businesses and organisations who have to deal with the fallout of all of this.”

Following the departure of Boris Johnson’s adviser Dominic Cummings, some Brexiteer have warned the Prime Minster may be about to cave to the EU.

Mr Johnson has also faced pressure from US President-elect, Joe Biden, who has encouraged the UK to strike a deal with the EU.

Boris Johnson’s Government has repeatedly said they are open to getting a deal but will not do so at the expense of compromising on some of their key issues.
